Digital Obata is an “augmented viewing” app that complements the exhibition, Chiura Obata: An American Modern, a retrospective of the art of Chiura Obata (1885-1975), one of the most significant Japanese American artists in the twentieth century. The app leverages technologies in image recognition to offer interactive features that increase a visitor’s engagement with the artwork on display. Visitors can point their iOS devices at an image in the gallery and see virtual links on their smartphone screens that take them beyond a museum’s physical space to explore other online, interdisciplinary resources. Digital Obata proposes experimental ways for viewers to experience exhibitions and for museums/institutions to disseminate research and engage the global public.
